Grand Deception Star

Documenting the deteriorating connection between truth and reality in these times…

About This Sound Collage Collection

UFOverdriver began creating sound collages in early 2010, and throughout that year released two different digital albums and a number of digital EPs and several collaborative projects.

Since April of 2011, UFOverdriver has limited it’s releases to a small number of digital EPs and single track recordings (you can find all those on the UFOverdriver BandCamp Site), capturing the various impulses from the collective consciousness, and my own impressions on this moment we’re living through – yesterday, today and tomorrow…

Grand Deception Star is a collection of selected sound collages from December of 2010 through May of 2012, and though previously released on their own, make a complete vision when grouped together.

A Grand Deception Star

Some people would say, without a doubt, our country (U.S.A.) has accelerated it’s long move towards manifesting the dsytopian dream of some very secretive individuals and groups.

Through the use of the mainstream media, political manipulations, financial control of the banks and monetary policies, the military industrial complex, the private prison industry and an innumerable amount of deception and lying, these people have created a world of illusion and misinformation that fools many people into believing what they’re told is the true reality.

But it’s not reality – it’s just a grand deception star that’s so bright and luminous, so all encompassing, it obscures the truth and illuminates the lies as reality.

“Exposure to true information does not matter anymore…” (taken from a video of an “ex-KGB agent”…)

This sound collage captures a small piece of this dystopian change, chaos and confusion.

Track By Track

Track 1 – Transcendence Happening Here – The Earthquake and Tsunami Dream

Released on April 28, 2011
Length: 06:57

This sound collage is built around samples from the Buffalo Springfield classic – “For What It’s Worth”.

The piece takes the form of a dream of an earthquake followed by a tsunami and uses sound clips from audio recordings of the sound of the March 2011 9.0 magnitude earthquake in Japan.

Track 2 – This Land Is Your DreamWe Can Turn It Upside Down Pt.1

Released on November 20, 2011
Length: 02:32

UFOvedriver echos the voices of the 99% in a track that includes “This Land Is Your Land” by Woody Guthrie, the “Put A Bird On It” skit by Portlandia, sound clips from the movie “Ship of Fools” and more…

This track and the next three are from a sound collage EP called “We Can Turn It Upside Down” and the complete group was inspired by the actions of the Occupy Wall Street movement.

Track 3 -Life Is But A DreamWe Can Turn It Upside Down Pt.2

Released on November 20, 2011
Length: 02:52

This track includes samples from “Exquisite Corpse” by Bauhaus, “The Ghost of Tom Joad” by Bruce Springsteen, “Mysticism” by Evelyn Underhill, quotes from Alan Watts and other audio material…

Also, the voice at the beginning of this track comes from a video by this cool couple that has built their own small house to travel in – here’s a link:

Track 4 -The Old World Order Defense ScreenWe Can Turn It Upside Down Pt.3

Released on November 20, 2011
Length: 01:18

This track includes a man raving at a shopping mall, lots of typewriter sounds and Alan Watts pontificating…

Track 5 – The Highway Is A Riot TonightWe Can Turn It Upside Down Pt.4

Released on November 20, 2011
Length: 02:36

This track includes audio from the fall of 2011 police crackdowns on Occupy Davis and Occupy Oakland, samples from “The Ghost of Tom Joad” by Bruce Springsteen, quotes from Alan Watts and other audio material…

Track 6 – Has Anybody Seen Sam Lowry? The Seven Curses Mix

Released on February 20, 2012
Length: 09:57

The title of this track comes from a quote in the epic dystopian movie Brazil by Terry Gilliam and uses various sound clips from that film.

When Obama signed the NDAA on New Year’s Eve, 2011 and opened the door to indefinite military detention for American citizens, we slipped further into the gravity of the Grand Deception Star…

After laying down “seven curses on a judge so cruel”, this track goes into the collective unconscious, wondering – Dreams, Choices, Decision, Stories… how does the world come into existence?

There is a long monologue during this sound collage – it comes from the opening scene of the classic stream-of-consciousness movie Slacker by Richard Linklater while riding in a cab from the bus station to the next scene in the movie.

Track 7 – Make Today The Day

Released on May 28, 2012
Length: 03:24

This track brings us into the heart of the Grand Deception Star –

“Politics is weird… and creepy, and now I know it lacks even the loosest attachment to anything like reality…” – Shep Smith

Using sound clips, atmospheric loops, video footage shot in Joshua Tree, along with the usual UFOverdriver blend of dreams, the sub-conscious, and the everyday, this sound collage visualscape from UFOverdriver takes a ride through the desert in that strange zone between the blue pill and the red pill, the real and the super-real.

“Exposure to true information does not matter anymore…”

“We talked through the air in those days… thousands and thousands of miles…”

said the old woman.

“No,” said the hen.
“I do not see your shoe.”
My balloon is lost.
My little balloon is lost.
I want my little balloon.
I do not see your shoe.”

Who said, “I run down a hill.”?
I run down a tree.
Good bye, little balloon.

Dimensions – 8″ x 5.5″
Format – magazine layout – mixed-media collage on paper
Date – 1997/98

Swimming In Memphis was my short-lived small magazine project in the late 1990’s.

This magazine, which changed shape and size with each of it’s three volumes, consisted of collages, short writings on collage and various photocopied found objects and images.

Even though my vision for this small-magazine didn’t work out like I had originally envisioned, I ended up with a number of very nice collages, learned things I couldn’t have learned any other way, and had a great time being lost in the process of creating each volume.

This was the cover of volume number three – I’ll post a few pages from this project over the next week or so… as always, enjoy! (or not)

huddled in a black blanket shivering,

The face,

She has surfaced euphoric–
She had gone with the flow.
She had gone stark raving mad.

“I went,” Nick said, “Why not?”
“You’ve heard about his will?”

He had always been against that.
Acid rappers, freaks who made a competition out of who could take the most acid –

Today’s page from this word collage reads, as follows:

There was a wave of action,
And it flies,
And it bumbles,
And it’s a mystery,
I see it all,
Butterflies driving by.

I go grazing and shifting through things,
And I find meanings that have no meaning.

Tina’s orange gasoline thrift circle,
Trying to discover the mystery of flight,
We need to walk the dog,
Just walkin’ the dog,
The scooby doo dog.

What kind of animal is a dog?
Such a dog is dangerous,
What is she like?
She is not that kind of woman.
What a noise!
What a crowd!
What a man!
What a fool I am!

If I touch my head to the ground,
I can see you behind me.

Today’s Image – An Ongoing Series

Last Friday I started the long process of moving my “Today’s Image” from my Facebook page to this website.

So far I’ve posted pages from Today’s Images #262 back to #177 (March 14th’s Today’s Image) – and that’s 85 pages, many with extra information added which is not provided on my Facebook page. (But that still means I have 176 pages to go – good times!)

Of course, it’s taking so much longer than I expected. But hey – when does that not happen?

I’m just guessing here, but I think I spent well over 40 hours between Friday and Wednesday working on these updates…

What is Today’s Image?

Back in September of 2011 I decided to see if I could form a new habit – posting a single image a day from my (rather large) portfolio of work from the last 20-something years on my onehumanbeing Facebook page.

These objects of art include paintings, drawings, collages, word collages, sound collage. constructions, sculptures, buttons, photos and many other formats and mediums.

One of the problems with my rapid-cycling bipolar disorder is that I have trouble sustaining interest in a project for more than three or four days. And since this kind of thinking has gone on for so long, I was starting to get a bit neurotic about it, and not starting any project that couldn’t be completed quickly.

This, of course, is not going to work for the long-term. I have earth-work projects that will require months of sustained focus in my plans for the next couple of decades.

So this was the beginning of the process of building new pathways in my brain telling me I can work on projects over the long term. Basic cognitive therapy.

And it’s working – my self-image as an artist is different – I know I’m getting ready for those projects coming up in the near future. As a matter of fact – everything is falling slowly into place for these kinds of works 5 to 7 years down the road. (More on this later.)

This Is What’s Happening Here Through The End Of June – So Enjoy The Process

Visit Today’s Image under The Various Threads menu and follow the journey while I add the rest of the pages going back to September (while simultaneously continuing to add a new image each day) – there are so many interesting images that have already been posted to see… paintings, collages, sound collages, drawings, photos and more.

Even if you saw them when they were first posted you might want to check them out again in their new home. Art always gets better (on the personal level) the more time you spend with it…

Currently, we are nearing the end of a series called Sunday Final which started in late May, and follows one complete hand-made word collage book all the way through from beginning to end – with poetic translation – 31 pages in all.

In a way, slowly but surely, all the various threads of my creative life are being revealed. And to that I say – Enjoy!

The Sound of Early June…

Soundtrack For The June Gloom

I have several albums that I’m listening to that are forming my June 2012 soundtrack – the lead one is M. Ward’s 2006 album Post War, it’s really gotten under my skin and it’s turned out to be perfect for Long Beach’s “June Gloom” days…

Most June’s we have overcast mornings which are referred to locally as “June Gloom.” I like to think of it as extended coffee drinking hours…

Here’s one of the songs from this M. Ward album, it’s called Chinese Translation (this is a pretty cute video – enjoy!)

Now That The Coffee Is Kicking In

After playing Post War (and after my morning coffee is finished) I move on to John Lennon’s Mind Games – usually playing it several times in a row, letting the lyric saturate my mind.

This song really has my attention because it seems very relevant to the times we live in right now, today – Bring On The Lucie (Freda Peeple) – the video shows the lyrics, which is why I posted it.

After that I move on to other music, often coming back to a different John Lennon album later on in the day… and old Rolling Stones albums are starting to catch my attention, like Beggar’s Banquet and Goat Head Soup – maybe the sound of mid-June sneaking in.

Somewhere in all this is some of the sounds I’ll be using for my next sound collage – I just don’t know what pieces yet.

Any way, that’s how June, here in Long Beach California in 2012, sounds to me so far – and now, if it’s still overcast, I think I’ll put on an extra cup of coffee…
