Images, Symbols and The World Around Us

We live in a world made of images and symbols which we perceive through our eyes and interpret with our brains. As we grow, we learn to see the world and it’s images, and these images become loaded with all kinds of meaning, some good and some bad.

Each one of us, through our different temperaments and experiences, will form our own individualized set of responses to these images around us. And these responses will, for the most part, lead and guide a person through life.

This leads to a very simple truth: Change the way you view the world around you and you change the way you think and act.

To me, this is the meaning behind the tarot card image of The Hanged Man. A man, viewing a world upside down, hanging in meditation, bliss and enlightenment.

Symbolism In This Drawing

In this drawing I borrowed the central image from The Hanged Man card, number twelve in the Major Arcana, from the Rider-Waite tarot deck.

Here he hangs suspended between heaven and earth on the World Tree, with white hair of wisdom, representing the hermetic ideal of As Above, So Below.

The two obelisks represent at least four different things, one of which is the twelve houses of the zodiac, as the hanging man’s illumination represents the sun at the center.

The clouds above represent the process of consciousness entering the body and the process of individualization… and that’s just a few of the many symbols in this drawing. With much thought and meditation it is possible to find and interpret the numerous other symbols imbedded in this drawing.

It’s this process of thought and meditation which helps us understand the “why” behind the way we see things and opens the door to seeing in a whole new way. Symbols are like keys to unlock those doors.

Enjoy exploring the drawing!

A Consciousness Vehicle – Imagination and Reality

blue_600

Above: The Blue Pilgrim by Jon Christopher

A Consciousness Vehicle

Last week I posted this question on Facebook:

Want to change your perspective for a moment? Realize that every single person around you is a consciousness inhabiting a physical body – a consciousness vehicle. Most people believe they are the vehicle. They are not the vehicle… they are either the driver or a passenger.

This idea came from an article I had read called Jon Rappoport’s Talk On The Trickster-God And Creating Reality on The Mathisen Corollary, a blog I came across while looking up something unrelated. Here is a quote from Jon Rappoport’s talk:

Something impossible is happening here right now.

Your brain is made out of the same particles mine is, same as the chair is, same as that camera, same as her lipstick, same as that strap, same as that thing you’re wearing, a bracelet.

It’s all the same particles. Brain? Same particles…

So by conventional physics (materialism, that’s the philosophy aspect of it) there’s no possible way that I could be talking and you could be sitting there understanding what I’m saying.

But yet, it’s happening! Impossible!

Therefore . . . you’re not material. Hate to break it to you. Neither am I. We’re inhabiting these things, but we’re not material.

These things are material, but we’re not . . . and we possess this capacity to understand each other.

Yes, the physical vehicle has a part to play, in the theatrical this and the that and the blueah-yuh-yuh-yuh, but that’s it.

The actual understanding is non-material.

Imagination and Reality

I followed that up with a post along the same lines this week:

Where Does “Reality” Come From? The Wellspring Of Creativity, I Imagine…

re·al·i·ty | noun
1. the world or the state of things as they actually exist, as opposed to an idealistic or notional idea of them.
2. the state or quality of having existence or substance.

I would like to suggest that the world of human civilization we experience on a daily basis – what most people think of as reality – is the product of human imagination. If you live in a city, stop and look around yourself for a moment – can you find one thing that is where it is which isn’t the result of someone’s imagination? Even where nature is allowed to exist in a city is based on someone’s imagination, ideas, and plans.

I would also like to suggest that imagination (along with choice) is one of the most powerful forces an individual possesses. The things we imagine today WILL become the reality of tomorrow.

The life Tania and I have now, living in the hi-desert in a jackrabbit homestead cabin, is the result of years of imagining the future – and now we live it. It took time (and plans and hard work) for the imagination to manifest itself in “reality”, but here we are… and that’s a pretty powerful realization to both of us.

Of course, the downside to this powerful realization is that if you don’t imagine your own future, someone else will do it for you… and you probably won’t like it.

My current working model of reality: We are immaterial beings of consciousness inhabiting physical bodies manifesting our imagination into material realities.

Here’s a link (with a quote) to an article by Jon Rappoport which relates to these ideas:

The Creative Center Of The World

…Art is not a little sandbox. Fueled by liberated imagination, it is THE revolution the psyche has been asking for.

When one acts long enough, he realizes that the world could really be a stage, and the sound and fury would, in fact, signify something vital and deep.

When one paints long enough, he realizes this world and all the universe are but one painting out of an infinity of possible paintings.

When one writes long enough, he realizes that so-called history is but one story—and many other (better) stories could be told.

When one plays music long enough, he realizes that emotion can be lifted out of petty concerns into realms where feeling becomes vast triumph.

When one builds long enough, he realizes that the physical structure of civilization can be led out of mere functionality into dazzling new spaces.

This is where we could go. And the stars in space would pale by comparison…

Consciousness, Quantum Physics and Being Human

Consciousness Is The Ground of Being

I watched this on Friday evening. It’s about an hour long and very interesting, if you’re into stuff like consciousness, quantum physics and being human. I had never heard Dr. Amit Goswami speak before, but he covered many ideas which I think about a lot.

At this point in time (2013), the study of consciousness is still on the fringes of scientific study. As I mentioned to a friend the other day, “You could homestead in the field of consciousness and still not have a neighbor for miles around. That’s going to change soon…”

In my opinion this is going to change entirely in the next twenty years as “trans-humanism” starts becoming a reality. I think some of the most important subjects in science from 2035 to 2050 are going to be these questions:

  1. What is consciousness?
  2. What does it mean to be human (in the face of technologically-enhanced humans, cyborgs and humans uploaded into a virtual world)?

“Consciousness is the ground of being” is the profound idea which moved Dr. Goswami’s work, meaning, everything starts with consciousness, that’s when possibilities become an actual, manifested reality.

In this interview Dr. Goswami talks about many of the basic concepts (built on the idea stated above) which give physicists a good starting point as they begin to study this important part of our reality. Of course, he explains it a lot better than I do in this interview.

While watching this I said “Yes!” and “That’s right!” so many times. It was nice to have so many ideas I’ve learned intuitively are right on track.

Enjoy!

Description From YouTube – Published on September 1, 2012

Dr Amit Goswami ‘Consciousness, Quantum Physics and Being Human’ Interview by Iain McNay on ConsciousTV.

Author of many books including: ‘How Quantum Activism Can Save Civilization,’ ‘The Visionary Window: A Quantum Physicist’s Guide to Enlightenment’ and ‘God Is Not Dead’ talks about his life and how discovering that consciousness Is the ground of being changed his scientific thinking and also his approach to life as a human being.

He also explains downward causation, quantum non-locality, free will, intention, the observer effect, quantum collapse and how consciousness creates the manifest world.

PORTFOLIO – The Art of Jon Christopher

Featured

Jon, onehumanbeing“So, what do you do?”

“I’m an artist.”

“Really, what kind of art do you make? Do you paint?”

This is where I always pause, while my brain quickly runs through the mental catalog of the numerous art objects I’ve created over my lifetime, the wide variety…

“I do all kinds of stuff…” I usually end up replying.

If they look like they might want to hear more, I might say, “Mostly I make collages. Just about everything I do is based on collage – putting separate items together to create a new image, object, idea, sound-scape etc.”

Most people seem to go blank at this point. That’s when I throw in a new idea for them to consider, “Right now I’m focused on consciousness, and how to make art out of consciousness.”

I’m very proud of the brave people who want to find out more after that…

I’ve spent the last week (about 80 hours of computer time) adding work to the online retrospective show of my art since 1991. This is a major upgrade to a site I started work on in 2011 – if you visited it before you’ll find that the whole site has been extensively updated.

It’s been a very involved process, and just might be my favorite website I’ve ever built.

The PORTFOLIO is now open and ready for viewing! Continue reading

A Conscious Change

This is the follow-up post to Driving Towards The End Of The World – After The End Of The World, Part One, a look back on 2012 and my own personal adventure during that year riding the bipolarcoaster, creating art and watching the wheels go round and round as each day we moved closer to the end of the world…

In this post we go down a rabbit hole of books – into fear and loathing, conspiracy theories, alien abductions, near-death experiences and finally into the NOW as I write about my reading journey to the fringes of the world of ideas in pursuit of my subject, consciousness – while looking for better descriptions of the human experience.

After The End Of The World, Part Two

Book-pile

Change is an unpredictable process. Every day you’re constantly in the process of changing, but once in a great while a quantum leap kind-of-change can come along and really speed up the process.

It arrives suddenly, quickly, in a moment, but it’s usually the result of a number of changes over a period of time which have built on each other like a kind of pressure. When there’s a new vibration, frequency or idea which pushes the pressure past the tipping point a quantum leap change can happen – and then suddenly everything becomes different.

After the year I’d had in 2012, and the devastation which depression was wrecking upon my psyche, I desperately needed a change. Not an external change but one inside me… and not a little change but the quantum leap size change. I just had no idea what it could be that would do this, or how to get there… Continue reading

My Personal Cognitive Matrix

Note: This post comes after many months of contemplation and is based upon theories which are under development, but I find very interesting and I want to share my thoughts so far on this concept I call my “Personal Cognitive Matrix.”

Keep in mind as you are reading that everyone has their own personal cognitive matrix. In this post I share examples from my own life just for illustration purposes.

Introduction To My Personal Cognitive Matrix

I used to assume that the world looked the same to everyone. I thought the way I saw the world was the same way everyone else was seeing things. I was wrong about that…

In many ways, for many years, I naively assumed that everyone also had the same values I do, felt the same rage at injustice that drives so many of my projects, looked for the same beauty I seek, desired compassion, truth, idealism, etc. – all the little pieces of personality or my “self” that make up my personal cognitive matrix.

My view of things started to radically change when I was 33 and found out I have bi-polar disorder. For the first time I really became concretely aware that I was experiencing a world in a very different way than many of the people around me.

Sure, it all looks the same, but the perceptions are very different for each of us, very subjective and subject to change.

In the post ahead I’m going to go back to the basics and explain some of the elements in my thinking process, and look at how I see my personal cognitive matrix constructed.

Personal Cognitive Matrix Defined

Personal – Of, affecting, or belonging to a particular person rather than to anyone else.

Cognitive – Of, or pertaining to, the mental processes of perception, memory, judgment, and reasoning, as contrasted with emotional and volitional processes.

Matrix – An environment or material in which something develops.

Personal Cognitive Matrix is a phrase I have created to describe the world “as I know it to be” separate from the world “as we all know it to be”  – which is  very different from the world “as it really is.”

My personal cognitive matrix is built from many things like my spirit and my relationship to the greater “super-consciousness”, but the beginning is my most basic relationships – where did I enter this world – what time, what day and where on the planet?

What were the relationships I was born into, family-wise, socially, and cosmically?

My Birth, The Stars And Then Everything…

Above: My Birth-sky – Here is a image showing where the Sun was at the moment of my birth in relation to my main planet Mercury (between the Horns of the Heavenly Bull), as well as Venus, Mars, Jupiter, my two dogs Canis Major and Canis Minor, the cradle of the slingshot of the Shepherd Auriga and the battle club of Orion, and most importantly – my birth sign, Gemini. The day after I was born Venus rose as the morning star…

I was born on Thursday afternoon, June 18, 1964 at 2:14 in Glendale, California.

My mother was checked into the second hospital in Glendale California she had been to in the last couple of days, during which time my Dad had gotten a new job, and the family moved from one house to another.

Maybe because I was born a Gemini I needed two hospitals to be born in, but when I came home I was, for my family, a new baby in a new home, son number three, and child number five.

My parents called me their “Holy Spirit Baby” because they had been “baptized in the Holy Spirit” around the same time I was conceived. This had a large impact on my life growing up.

And I was born during a time of great social change.

Born Under The Sign Of The Twins

As I mentioned (and I’m sure it’ll come up again) I was born in the sign of Gemini, with the Sun at the foot of Castor, one of the twins which make up the Gemini sign, Pollux being the other twin.

In the myths, Castor and Pollux were born to Leda after Zeus seduced her in the form of a swan. Castor was born human and Pollux was born divine.

When Castor was killed Pollux pleaded with his father Zeus to allow him to share his immortality with his twin, and raise him from the dead. Zeus agreed and together they became the constellation we know as Gemini in the night sky (this is the really short version of the story).

Anyone who has a Gemini friend knows the reality of two twins sharing an existence together in one body. We are the mercurial ones who naturally shift quickly from one mood to another like an ever changing breeze.

On my astrological chart, Gemini is everywhere – Gemini and Mercury.

When I was born Mercury rested between the horns of Taurus, the great bull of the heavens (shown below).

Spirit and Intention

In my meditations over the last couple of weeks I’ve been thinking of the words “Spirit” and “Intention” as interchangeable. Here’s some phrases I wrote down that illustrate this idea:

My spirit is my intention and vice-verse.

Intention is what animates us and moves the spirit in us.

The Holy Spirit is the Holy Intention of God.

When I do things with intention my spirit becomes engaged.

In my thinking I picture this spirit energy and intention as emanating from our hearts like a giant magnetic field which surrounds our whole body, and out a couple of feet – what we normally feel as our “personal space.” (see illustration below)

Spirit/Intention is different from consciousness – which includes a broad range of awareness/states we experience.

Consciousness

Most of the time when I’m sitting and thinking, my personal consciousness is engaged with the greater “super-consciousness” along with my intention/spirit, which is floating in this realm of the greater “super-consciousness”.

I see it as a morphic field without confining barriers (it doesn’t just exist inside me, but rather it’s a field that runs through every conscious thing) – like a great sea, but not of water, just created from the field of the energy of existence – also known as “chi.”

My personal consciousness seems to be anchored (primarily) with the pineal gland in the center of my brain, but each of my cells seems to participate is this process too, even though I don’t understand this very well – that’s just my intuitive feeling.

My personal connection to consciousness seems to be a complete body experience, while at other times it’s merely tethered to my body by it’s connection to my pineal gland. This is a strange science indeed – and we are just at the beginning stages of studying this fascinating part of reality.

Below: this is a rough sketch from my notebook showing the magnetic field that originates in our hearts and surrounds us like much like the Earth’s magnetic field. The wavy lines show how our personal fields tend to sublimely interact with one anther in the “greater super-consciousness.”

These two parts (intention/spirit and consciousness) seem to work together, or not, to create my individual human experience which is somewhat porous and can receive outside conscious information.

These two parts of myself combine with where I physically exist in time and space, which also includes the cosmic influences on me because of the place and time of my birth, and together, all this helps to form my Personal Cognitive Matrix I live in everyday. And everyone around me is having their own similar experience – similar, but very different.

This is the beginning of my postings on this subject – we still need to add the “soul” into the mixture, but I save that for a later posting.

Today’s Image #301

Title“A New American Prayer – Album Insert
Dimensions – square format – various sizes
Format –  digital collage
Date – 2012

Here’s a photo of me wearing my Blue Katchina Headdress, my Kukulcan Helmet of Consciousness, my Quetzalcoatl Crown of Returning… all these things and more.

It’s one of the images I created while working on the CD package for the sound collage from 2010 (when Tania took this photo of me) called A New American Prayer.

I digitally added an old drawing of how consciousness works (or so they thought), and it fit so well I decided to keep it… I thought it added a very “Mayan” look with my dreadlocks.

Just a reminder – CDs are coming out very soon along with a special give-away!
