First Impressions

January 15, 2009

I visited Soothing Remedy Cooperative (link to Weedtracker.com forum about SRC) today for the first time to drop off my MMJ paperwork so they could call my doctor and verify my recommendation.

(note: you can call ahead, which I did, but I wanted to go visit them and see the place)

My doctor went home sick today, so I’ll have to wait until at least tomorrow to be able to check out the herb…

First impressions:

My view arriving a SRC was about the same as the Google Streetview image at the top of the page, but don’t be put off – the good stuff is inside.

Almost better than picking up some herb was talking with E—- (keeping the names private), who was running the place, about medical marijuana, the need for good information for patients and The Medical Marijuana Lists.

I had received a message from them after I stopped doing the CCLB menus on WeedTracker.com in November, and was finally getting back to them in response to their interest in my informal strain research (no claim to be a scientist here – I’m just a artist doing his work…)

After talking for 20 minutes or so, and after my paperwork and ID had been photocopied, I got walked to the door and invited to come back after my paperwork had been verified.

I can not tell you how impressed I was with that – even after a great conversation, even after previous interest in my work, E—- stuck to the rules and didn’t invite me in. And that’s the way it should be.

Most people (that is, the ones with a MediCann card or California MMP card) have an easier time getting in collectives and cooperatives than I do with my recommendation from my regular doctor (Kaiser doctor) who I have been seeing for ten years. My paperwork is great – completely legal and conforms to the way Prop 215 was written, but most people go to a place like MediCann these days, which has online verification or someone always there to verify a patient. I’m not putting that down, I think that’s a great advancement.

Last year I had to wait two weeks until my doctor got back from vacation before I could start visiting a collective two blocks from my home…

I was o.k. with that, because a MMJ patient usually has options – and I did. You can feel generous knowing you’re just trying to save gas money (remember those crazy gas prices last year?) and you can go to your regular collective.

But it gives me pleasure when I visit a clinic and have to wait because they’re following the legal restriction. Often, I’m the first person they seen with a real letter from his doctor, and I try and make it easy on them.

I think that Prop. 215 (Compassionate Use Act of 1996) – on it’s own is an excellent law, but the political world has been struggling with this rebuke of their drug war lies about the herb ever since it was passed in 1996 by a bigger majority than any politician will ever get in any election.

That aside, there’s the little details, the nuts and bolts of having marijuana collectives and cooperatives setting up shop in your city… Some people aren’t comfortable with that idea yet… but it’s the law in the State of California and preventing safe access to medical marijuana is breaking the law.

Of course, we can got on about the politics forever, and there are more important things to do right now…

I’ll post an addition to this report after the next time I visit Soothing Remedy Cooperative.

Until then, best of health.

Follow Up

Follow-Up:

January 15, 2009: Returned to SR and took photos – very nice selection chosen with obvious care and thoughtfulness. Sampled the Mango OG Kush and Sour Kush – reviews coming soon.

January 27, 2009: Returned again to take more photos – I really enjoy talking with E—–, who run the co-op and MrBig562 (his Weedtracker name) who I know from taking photos at CCLB last summer.

Good news – MrBig562 will be posting reviews on The Medical Marijuana List. I’ll let him introduce himself when we launch, but I think you’ll enjoy his unique perspective…

Comprehensive report to follow later. (I have photos to process and project sites to build – launch day is just around the corner)
